It’s easy for me to forget how long I have been an active member of the Autistic community. Years blend together, meaning that I lose sight of the 8 years I have spent growing my experience and knowledge in what the wider world would reductively call “autism support”.
I talk a lot about neurodivergence competence and how neuro-affirming approaches are not enough. And so, i felt it was time to summarise what neurodivergence competence means with regard to supporting Autistic people.
The framework can be summarised as follows:
Understanding Autistic Experience
Sensory & Emotional Worlds
Autistic Burnout & Capacity
Identity & Neurodivergence
Safety, Trauma & Environment
Learning From Autistic Community
These six foundations form the core of how I support the Autistic people I work with, and I felt it was time to share them more widely.
